I'm probably going to set this blog as my default website for now, seeing as how it's got most of my stuff on it. I thought about migrating over to Wordpress, but then I would have to start fresh, and I would lose a lot of the work I've already posted here.
So this site is going public now, at least until I get another flash site up.
Digital photography is pretty cheap. Almost everything looks good in black and white. Lens correction is a miraculous tool. Recently, I've liked doing photography more than I like drawing. Here are some before and after's from NYC. In some of these, I like the before more than the after... but the after has a lot of subtle changes that were interesting to make. The last few are shitty because I got tired of editing. Click for larger pngs.
Finished up season two of House, and now I'm caught up with the entire series. Sad, really. Season 5 starts in September, and it's the one thing in September I'm looking forward to.
I wanted to get better this summer. Better at art and stuff, so I would go back in September with a little confidence and certainty. I just don't know where to start. I don't even know what I want to do anymore.
So I just got this new DS Lite, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, AND Guitar Hero On Tour all for $80. Fucking awesome. The GameStop at the mall was much more friendly than those guys next to Wegmans, and they gave me $50 for my old DS as long as I put it towards a DS Lite (I didn't know they were still running that promotion, the guys at the other store failed to mention it. Hm.) So that was pretty awesome, and much more awesome than $20 for my old system. And with a bunch of gift cards, I went ahead and bought the two games, and now my life is complete.
I am supposed to be working from home today, and I am, but this is so hard when I have a brand new system and two new games sitting on my desk.
I just watched the documentary on Marla Olmstead, and it drives me nuts how people try to overthink everything, especially abstract art. Abstract art is a load of shit half the time, and the only signifigance of it is the story behind it; some 40-year old man could have painted the same thing this 4-year old girl did, but it wouldn't have sold for $15,000 because he wouldn't have been seen as a "child prodigy." There was a good quote in the movie about how a woman detested Pollock's paintings because it seemed like he was saying everyone was an idiot for not understanding his art. The irony is forever a mystery, whether it really is the audience who doesn't get it, or Pollock was just yanking our chains and successfully passed off his bullshit for millions of dollars. The only type of artist that does that is a con artist, and I can't help but believe that all abstract painters are making their crap just to prove how stupid we all are. Abstraction proves nothing about the artist, but everything about the viewer. Without those morons who disect every stroke on a modernist painting, none of them would sell, aside from the few that demonstrate coherent color palettes or design elements or just happen to match some rich collector's home furnishings. The fact that a 4-year old girl is making thousand-dollar paintings is proof that abstract art doesn't take any technical or aesthetic training. So every time I've walked into the MoMa and said, "I could do that," I wasn't far from the truth.
Watching Marla paint her "masterpieces," it's completely obvious she doesn't realize what she's doing. To call her an artist is fair, being that art is merely a form of expression, but to call her a genius or a prodigy is totally uncalled for. Anyone with feelings can make art, and if it weren't for her age factor, she would not be anything out of the ordinary.
I also think the parents are still lying about not helping her, because her dad seems like a douche.
I wish I could find a video of the opening sequence for this movie, because it was AWESOME. The 2d-styled animation was incredible. I think that was the best part of the movie ... no, there were some awesome camera angles and speeds that I'd never seen used in CG movies before, making the fight scenes absolutely gorgeous. Idk.
