i actually got the shark design from a google image i spotted while browsing for image reference for something completely unrelated to sharks. apparently, it's from a place in nyc called beatrix, and this is the backpack i saw the shark on.

so yeah, long story short, i didn't actually design the shark. but it's super cute. also, i really want this.

Cloudkid just blogged about some of the creative process behind one of our more recent games, Freestyle Fizz. Here're some images that show the concept sketch to final design of some of the levels in the game... I was responsible for the rough sketches and designs, which in turn get handed to another artist who finalizes them.

We also just released our newest game, Hardboiled! Check it out, it's got a 2 player mode so you can play with a friend... or cheat so you will always win. Whatever suits your style, I guess.

Fizzy's Runch Rab's New Game!

Fizzy's just launched a new game on their site, Freestyle Fizz! Check it out, I did some design and stuff, including that screen transition! (It's not toilet paper rolls, they're skate wheels, god.)

Game tip: if you jump on the "bad" foods, you can crush them and get +50 points! Here's a bunch of foods I crushed and squished for the game: (no real food was harmed in the making of these images)

I also storyboarded and did the animatics for the Fizz Meister's extreme moves, check 'em out below. They were animated by these two talented peeps!! PLAY THE GAME ALREADY!

Supermarket Mania!!

Fizzy's launched a new game today, Supermarket Mania! I helped design the game board and did some animation here and there, including the characters and the result screens. I also did the little ticket pull animation at the start of each turn. OH THE LITTLE THINGS!

Here's the rough of the game board, I'd never done anything in iso before, so it was kinda cool/challenging/infuriatingly precise. This got sent off to some uber talented designer, and he made it super awesome, which is what you see in the game now.

So I designed a skate deck for one of my friends for Xmas, and to reduce the risk of him seeing it on the interwebs, I held off on posting it until now. Never drew for a skate deck before, so it was pretty fun. Here's the actual design:

And here's the board! I used Zazzle.com, and the printing was good, EXCEPT the board shipped with a scratch in it, so that kind of sucked. I didn't have time to send it back and inquire about it though, so whatever. All in all, pretty sweet. Might do some more in the future. Click images to make 'em bigger!

I saw a real, wild moose for the first time yesterday, and I think it may have changed my life. We were driving in NH and it was just chilling on the side of the road, just feet away from my car. It ran into the woods, and we were watching it from the car for a bit... and then it suddenly started running at us, but turned back around before it got to the road, thank god. Not sure if my insurance covers giant animals ramming my car.

Moose are HUMONGOUS, and the one we saw was antler-less and probably female, which means the males are even bigger. According to Wikipedia, "In winter, moose are often drawn to roadways, to lick salt that is used as a snow and ice melter." haha cute.

Apart from the moose sighting, I also saw Inception, and while it was good, I don't think I would see it twice. Though I would probably pay money to see another moose up close, so I don't know what that says about my priorities.

I need some new video games to play.

asdfirhoere haven't drawn in a while. Doodle from this morning + quick one-shot fleshing-out-and-semi-clean-up. Some good things happening, some not so great lines.

My sleep schedule has been so out of whack ever since I got back to the States. Two nights ago, couldn't sleep past 5am. Last night, didn't sleep until 5am. Either way, I keep falling asleep around 6pm, missing dinner, and then waking up at midnight, starving. IT'S FRUSTRATING.

And while all of this is happening, my brother in the next room is sleeping 12+ hours a night, undisturbed by the time shift. HOW. Maybe because the first night we got back, he slept 17 straight hours, which is probably long enough to call it a coma.

Anyway, enough about jetlag, the trip was really good, pics up on Facebook and Flickr, maybe I'll post some here later. Asia is amazing, despite the unbearable humidity, and Tokyo is probably the best city I have ever been to. One thing I'm really going to miss is the cheap public transportation. After riding the subway in Hong Kong and Japan, I can't believe I have to pay twice as much to ride a train in Boston that's half as clean and efficient. BLASPHEMY. Also they have awesome "fast food" and Japan has toilets that clean your ass, so like, America needs to step up its game.

Then again, we did get to see Toy Story 3 (and all other movies) a month before Asia did, so I guess that's cool. BUT NOT AS COOL AS A TOILET THAT WASHES YOUR BUTT.

Senior Show was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who came out to support us; the whole day was kind of unreal, and I'm still coasting on the good vibes from it, even two days later. Got an immensely positive reaction to my work, which was reassuring and encouraging, to say the least. It sort of just hit me while I was walking home last night that it's all over, that there's no more school to keep me in check and discipline me, and for the first time in maybe ever, I think I'm ok with that.

I'm working on getting my shorts up on the interwebs, so I'll post them when I get it sorted out.

(BTW If you're reading this because I forced my business card on you, then hi haha)

Again, a huge thanks to everyone who came to the show and/or after party. Also, if you saw the crazy asian kid dancing at the party, that was my brother. Congratulations to all my animation buddies, thanks for a great four years of awesomeness and burritos.

Interesting things have been happening with my doodling. Ever since this internship, I've been forced to step out of my comfort zone with a lot of drawing, and I never used to give anatomy and geometry much thought. Lately, however, I've been picking up slight details in drawing that I'd never noticed before, and I'm not sure if it's showing in my doodling or not, but sometimes it feels different when I draw stuff. If anything, it's been taking longer haha

I've been trying to pay attention to the lines of action (whoa basics coming back to haunt me) and the flow of lines... I've found myself drawing characters and trying to see how long I can make a line until I have to break it, which is producing some interesting results. Not going to lie, I probably picked this up from this troublemaker, since she draws with a lot of geometry and makes her lines really count... because there are so few of them. Sometimes she doesn't even use lines because she's a TROUBLEMAKER.

Also, ever since I did those lame (or so I thought) figure drawings a few weeks back, I've been thinking more about planes and how shit fits together. I also blame this on Justin, because I also have to deal with him at work (jk, J.K. ((see what I did there))), and he always manages to show dimension with his drawing, which is impressive because he also uses very vew lines.

... I'm pretty sure it's not a coincidence I referenced the two people I spend prolonged hours with during the week. D'aww you guys.

Anyone need a place to live in Boston this summer? FML

I have a folder on my computer where I keep images I like, and within that folder is another folder dedicated to skateboard decks; don't ask why cuz I dunno. (There is also a folder dedicated to Bayonetta fanart, but that should require no reasoning.) Anyway, I saw a post recently that reignited my love for deck designs, so um, here's a huge-ass image of my collection of favorite skateboard deck art. When I say huge image, I mean it, because I actually just made a single jpg of all these decks... because I thought it would be easier to post one image instead of 30+. I may have made an incredibly slow-loading jpg, but hey: the time I saved is the time you spend waiting for this jpg to load haha.

Disclaimer: I am not trying to take credit for any of these, in case someone stumbles on this blog and thinks I'm some kind of crazy deck artist. So if you know anything about me, it's that I love chicken parm. And Xbox360, but that's irrelevant. If you also haven't heard, I can't cook FOR SHIT. Or so I thought; if I've learned anything from going to college, it's that I can, in fact, make a meal... and there are a dozen brilliant ways to use Spam and canned tuna, just not together.

So here I have some frozen chicken patties, a slice of white american cheese, some angel hair pasta from Stop N Shop, and some awesome Classico pasta sauce. For someone who once burned Easy Mac her freshman year of college (it was a rough day, ok), I've come quite a ways. Check out this legit looking chicken parm eh.

FINAL VERDICT:

... Helps that I'm not a picky eater, as in, I like airplane food... No, but seriously, I've built up quite an impressive arsenal of foods I can "make," not that anyone would ever call me up to cook for their next dinner party, but hey, I make awesome fried rice and some bitchin' omelettes. I also grill a pretty mean steak, but that's more of a passion than anything... HAHA.

So I made some hands? While doing so, I learned about animation deformers, which would have helped me a ton had I known about them earlier. Basically you can bend and twist and deform anything just with the use of one handle. So much rigging I would have been able to skip. Learned some stuff about assembling pieces of geometry together, which is extremely helpful because I have been building really messy models up until this point. GOOD STUFF. LOOK AT THIS CREEPY SHIT! BTW I finally understand how skins for games work now. We did face modeling today, man that is some tedious stuff. Used celebrity mugshots for reference haha, I picked David Bowie? Then I went and slapped his face back on my model just to see what it would look like. CREEPY AS HELL APPARENTLY. Or like a Sims1 skin mod. Same thing. Picked up a couple modeling tricks, as well as how to properly keep meshes clean and grid-like... which I failed to do because it's effing hard as hell to build a clean model.

Ok well not 1337 exactly, but I'm ONE RANK OFF! Actually, this is a terrible rank in terms of the game, but as a geek, it would be an automatic win if I were ranked 1337. Unfortunately, after I refreshed this, I dropped down to 1344.

If you're wondering why I'm playing a fashion game when I'm usually found playing less... friendly... games, it's because this is the project I'm working on for work. Can't say I'm the best candidate for clothing design, and I've gone through hell and back trying to find the discipline within me to dig into this project, but it's turning out pretty good.

... but I made this in less than a day for a birthday THAT SAME DAY because I happened to fuck up big time that morning and completely destroy the model I had worked on all week. Despite the devastation and heartbreak, I think this second model might have come out a bit better, or maybe I'm just saying that for the sake of my dignity. Not like it could look worse hahahaha.

I'm terrible at 3d media or anything that doesn't involve a save/undo button, so this is a big deal for me. IT EVEN BOBBLES. Legit! I wish the spring was shorter though, so his head wasn't so high off his neck, and I made the eyes too big.

The colors are kind of desaturated because of the jpg compression on this photo. It looks better in real life. Not like your mom.

I've been working on these projects at work that are in this no-outline, block shading style... basically drawing in Flash without actually drawing. Just rectangles and ovals shaped by their corners and edges. Threw this together just now, been wanting to put this style to use outside of work.

But damn, I haven't had time for much of anything these days.

21 in 4 days. Really looking forward to next Friday, though.

Here is that project I started in Maya... which is proving much more troublesome than I could have ever imagined. The first video is the preview render of the whole story. The animation probably isn't final, just wanted to block in the story for the sake of my teacher's sanity. But I mean, the way my files are looking right now, it probably won't change much from this preview, since I'm afraid to edit too much and mess up all the files... again. The HQ button doesn't seem to work on this video, dunno.

This second video is a render of the first scene, meaning it has smoothed edges, textures, and lights and shadows. So eventually this is what the whole thing will look like. Still no sound on any of these, that's a whole 'nother ordeal I haven't gotten around to quite yet. This one looks good in high quality, so uh, hit that HQ button.
